How to Spot a Phishing Email Before You Click

Phishing emails pretend to come from a store, bank or delivery company so you’ll click a link or share details. These signs give most of them away.

1. Urgent pressure

“Act now or your account will be closed” is a classic trick. Real companies rarely threaten you by email.

2. A mismatched sender

Look at the actual email address, not just the display name. A shipping notice from a free email account is a red flag.

3. Links that go somewhere else

On a computer, hover over a link to see where it really goes. On a phone, press and hold. If in doubt, type the store’s address yourself.

4. Requests for passwords or card numbers

We will never ask for your password or full card number by email or phone. Neither will your bank.

5. Unexpected attachments

Don’t open attachments you weren’t expecting, especially “invoices” or “labels” from companies you didn’t order from.

6. Too good to be true

Free gift cards and prizes for surveys you never took are almost always scams.
